In today's News Pile, following the State of the Union address Fred Toettcher ("Toucher") echoed the GOP party line by saying the President "hit a home run on Social Security". In praising the President, Toucher echoed the GOP party line that social security is insolvent. "if you're under 50 you should be afraid of that being taken away".
In fact the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office has demonstrated
that under the current system that Social Security will remain solvent
until 2053.
Toucher also unfairly characterized opposition to social security by claiming that Democrats were "afraid" of losing Social Security as an issue. In fact many Republicans oppose Bush's agenda of privatizing Social Security.
