Most people know that Jimmy Baron is vocal in his support of animal rights causes, including the controversial PETA. What they don't know is that Jimmy is also a Republican donor. According to opensecrets.org, James D. Baron gave $750 during the course of the 2002 campaign to (now Senator) Saxby Chambliss.
The Saxby Chambliss campaign set a new low for dirty politics by saying that Silver Star decorated war hero Max Cleland, a triple amputee from wounds sustained in Vietnam, broke "his oath to protect and defend the Constitution" (Mary McGrory, Washington Post) and subsequently ran "ads, illustrated with pictures of Osama bin Laden and Saddam Hussein, questioning Cleland's commitment to homeland security." Ironically, "during the 1960s, Chambliss, ... avoided military service because he received student deferments and, due to a bad knee, a medical deferment." (Tatsha Robertson, Boston Globe).
Apparently, Mr. Baron was such a Chambliss supporter that he married the campaign's Press Secretary.
