I listened to four or five segments of the Giant Show. Here are a few observations.
- There's definitely an Adam Carolla vibe: Shaffee in tone and delivery and Brian in the way he constructs jokes. To me, this is a good thing, particularly as they're not packaged with Danny Bonaduce.
- I was talking to a radio insider yesterday and he wondered, given 99X's ratings, what they hope to gain by making fun of The New Morning X. It dawned on me that they make fun of Leslie not because they're going after 99X's audience, but because they're going after 99X's former audience--people who eschewed 99X some time ago in favor of 680 The Fan, WSB or the River.
- I wonder whether Cumulus EVP for programming John Dickey is spinning or he believes what he's saying when he tells Rodney Ho:
“We’re trying to get better every day,” [John Dickey] said of the New Morning X. “It’s a pretty good show. It can always strive to be more compelling, more entertaining, more relevant. We are holding ourselves to an extremely high standard.”
He said he feels Atlanta listeners can now better differentiate the “clean witty” show on 99X to the younger, more “locker room” humor of Project.
I didn't hear anything approaching locker room. They gave out "You stink!" awards. Not -- "You suck!" or "You blow!" but "You stink!" John Dickey must have had high school gym in a Disney movie.
