Toucher on 99X

Without Toucher there would have been no 99XWatch.org. In the first year of 99XWatch, approximately 20% of the posts were critical of him.  I started listening to Toucher nights during my dot com days, working late nights alone in an office.  I still have emails that we exchanged about  The Onion and The Kids of Widney High.  The piece I wrote when Fred left 99X, bound for Boston, remains one of my favorite posts.  Toucher writes:

It is sad that  a lot of good people lost their jobs over the last almost two years.  These were the same people that made 99x what it is.  Can anyone reasonably blame them for it's demise?

I never thought of myself as a jaded or cynical person, which may be why it took over a year of daily hour-long commutes for my new radio crush to percolate. When I started listening to Toucher and Rich, it seemed like Rich was the one meant to draw in the extraneous female listenership. After all, he's married to his high school sweetheart and tends to be the least caustic and offensive of the show members with IQs over 50, while still having enough bite and balls to be manly. But Fred Toucher's brand of wit, bile and alcoholism is just plain sexy.

The Gift That Keeps on Giving

This morning at 1:02 AM, Toucher posted the following on his blog:

Due to the input of some in the legal profession (employed by Steve Barnes) it has come to my attention that I have said some things about Steve Barnes that maybe untrue.

1) Barnes' lawyer assures me that he is not mentaly retarted.

2) I have been informed that Barnes has never been in the military or been in charge of a sailing vessel. I have never seen the condition of his back in person. Just in the film "No Witness."

3) The photo of the man with the horrible back acne that accompanied the original article is not of Steve Barnes.

I always known that Barne's is a retard but he has sunked to levels deeper than I could imagine. ( I would have said "deeper than no witness" but we all know shit floats. It seems like captain back acne is going through people's Myspace friends lists and sending out unsolicited messages to strangers ...

Fucking hack! That's fine that your scared for your job (I can relate) but leave my people alone. Nobody who liked me on the air is going to put up with your boring shot for 10 seconds.

Toucher Clarifies Boston Globe Comment

I know some of you are upset about the comments I made in the Boston Globe about Southeners not being as open minded or intelligent as those in the Northeast.

Let's face it audiences in the Northeast are more open minded than those in the South. Why do you think that the only major market that didn't have Howard Stern was Atlanta? Why aren't Opie and Anthony on in the ATL? Why do you get crucified everytime you say a bad word about George W? Jesus put on any David Cross album and here what he says about his hometown. However, David still sells places out when he comes back to the south.

I made fun of southern rednecks for 7 years on Atlanta radio. So you know what if you liked my show: You aren't a fucking redneck! Remenber the ANA? The anti-neck army? Jesus people lighten up!  [Emphasis added.]

Both Toucher, who grew up in Michigan, and Shertenlieb, a New York native, expect to fit in better in Boston than they did in the South. "The way that we do radio is really more appropriate for the Northeast," says Toucher. They spent much of their first show goofing on their former audiences. "People are more intelligent, more educated here," he says.

Toucher's Move to WBCN "Official"

The Toucher and Rich show is starting at WBCN in Boston on June 5th at 3pm. Opie and Anthony are starting in mornings this Wednesday. In the opinion of many the combination of O and A and Toucher and Rich makes WBCN the best rock radio station in the country.

In other WBCN news, former Atlanta radio personalities Fred Toucher and Crash Clark will be joining Dallas radio guy Rich Shertenlieb for the ''Toucher and Rich Show" weekday afternoons on the Boston rock station. Clark was fired from the Atlanta station.
